Start with one specific task
Test a model API with synthetic tasks after limiting calls, output length and retries, then compare usage with the provider’s bill.
Check current pricing → Estimate input and output → Bound the test → Validate alerts and stops → Reconcile usage

- Check official provider documentation for the model, billing units, input and output rates, caching, and tool charges. Record when the rates were checked.
- Estimate input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate + other charges. Normalize all rates to a common token unit first.
- Keep API keys in environment variables or a private credential service, never in a web page, persona template, public repository or support ticket.
- Limit calls, output length, concurrency, timeouts and retries. Failed retries and tool use may also incur charges.
- Distinguish an alert from an enforced stop. A notification or a template number is not a provider hard limit; the execution layer must implement and test stopping.
- Run a small synthetic sample and reconcile actual usage with billing. Stop the test if rates differ, retries escape their bounds or usage becomes unexpected.
Worked example and acceptance checks
The following is an illustrative test case, not a live model result or a compatibility certificate.
Illustrative calculation only: assume CNY 2 per million input tokens and CNY 8 per million output tokens. With 2,000 input and 500 output tokens, the estimate is CNY 0.008 per call, or CNY 8 for 1,000 calls. These are not provider prices; caching, tools, taxes and other charges are excluded.
- Record the rate date, currency and billing unit.
- Enforce retries, concurrency and stopping in the runtime.
- Keep estimates separate from actual provider bills.
What is available now
The template is free; model API charges are billed by the provider. This guide offers no live price, discounted subscription or savings guarantee. Example amounts are illustrative.
Compatibility depends on the client. These packages have not been certified across all agent products. Check the version, author, and license on the template page before use.
Frequently asked questions
Does a budget number automatically stop spending?
No. Use a provider hard limit or tested execution-layer enforcement. An alert alone cannot stop calls.
Does the free template include API credit?
No. Model services are billed independently under provider terms.
